Omaha Yoga Notes
(January/February 2008)

With Theresa Murphy

As a new year rolls in, many people find themselves pumped for big change. Resolutions abound. Health Clubs see a surge in memberships (or long lost members find their way back to packed workout areas). Yoga studios are not immune. With more people tuned into the benefits of a healthy body, relaxed mind and happy heart, yoga studios are ready to serve, and Omaha has made it’s mark on the map.
If you are one of those people looking to make a change, and the gym rut has you less than inspired, it’s time to check out what the Big Om has to offer.
2007 saw the birth and re-birth of several new yoga studios, adding to the studios that have been around for many years. Omaha now has a full menu for new and experienced students alike.

New to the scene since 2007

Located just west of the Old Market District, A Yoga Practice (AYogaPractice.com) opened in early 2007 founded by long time yogi Brent Bloom. He offers a weekly collection of classes from a handful of teachers. Classes vary in style and intensity.

A Little Yoga Space, owned and operated by Nicole LeClerc (212-4290, no website as of yet), in the heart of the Old Market offers beginning and basic classes weekly. Nicole teaches all classes and monthly restorative yoga workshops the third Sunday of every month.

Yoga Path (OmahaYogaPath.net) was born mid 2007 just north of Creighton University on 24th Street. In addition to a solid weekly offering of classes by a variety of teachers, founder Mark Watson holds various workshops as well.

Yoga Studio Reincarnations

Omaha’s oldest yoga studio, Omaha Yoga School (OmahaYogaSchool.com) on the Old Market’s Howard Street, recently changed hands; now offering HYP Yoga. This new take on yoga uses hypnosis techniques combined with time tested yogic practices for weight loss. Omaha Yoga School still holds weekly classes with some of their “old school” teachers honoring the classical tradition.

Lighthouse Yoga Studio on Leavenworth Street has transformed into Bhadra Yoga (BhadraYoga.com), founded by Melanie McLeod. (Previous Lighthouse founder, Jed Moulton, can be found teaching weekly classes at Yoga Path and Omaha Yoga and Bodywork Center.) Bhadra’s class offerings are mainly in the vinyasa yoga, yin yoga and non-flow styles. Each of these yoga styles are featured in a weekly Saturday “Intro to Yoga” Class, free upon your first visit to Bhadra.

Combined with Omaha’s familiar yoga faces, Omaha Yoga & Bodywork Center, One Tree Yoga, and Joel Dunning offering Taoist Yoga at the Four Winds Natural Healing Center, the newbies and reincarnates should have enough events to keep yogis well on their way to full enlightenment! Check out the featured events for January and February.
